H.M.S Renown – Durban Harbour

Signed and not dated, c. 1944. 

HMS Renown (1916-48) was one of two Renown-class battlecruisers built for the Royal Navy during the First World War. Between Dec 1942 and Feb 1945 HMS Renown was docked in Durban harbour for a refit and an upgrade. In the background of this painting, one can see The Bluff. In the foreground is what is today known as J-Jetty. (Archivally framed, 44cm by 59cm excluding frame; 59cm by 73,5cm by 9cm including frame).

Nieuwe Republiek Land Grant c.1888 & Blue Book 1887
Land Grant - Nieuwe Republiek signed by State President Lucas Johannes Meyer (1846-1902). This would have been one of the last official documents signed as the Nieuwe Republiek was disestablished on 20 July 1888. The Nieuwe Republiek was a small Boer Republic that existed from 1884-1888 in present-day South Africa. Its independence was proclaimed on 16 August 1884 with land donated by the Zulu Kingdom through a treaty.

Title of Blue Book: Further Correspondence respecting the Affairs of Zululand and Adjacent Territories 1887. Both maps are present.

Windsor & Newton of London Watercolour Paint Box
c.1870-1880
The box is made from Mahogany. According to the Winsor Newton archives the manufacture date was in the 1870’s/ 80’s because the label reads: By appointment to Her Majesty and H.R.H The Prince and Princess of Wales. The wedding of Albert Edward, Prince of Wales and Princess Alexandra of Denmark took place on 10 March 1863.
The tray has 12 slots for their fine full pan size watercolour paint blocks which appear to be original.

The South West Africa People's Organization, officially known as the SWAPO Party of Namibia, is a political party and former independence movement in Namibia. Founded in 1960, it has been the governing party in Namibia since the country achieved independence in 1990. This poster was issued before Namibia gained independence from South Africa on 21 March 1990. (In 1966 SWAPO declared war on South Africa, meaning this poster would have been banned).
