Olfert Dapper (1636-1689)

This copy is the first edition in German of Olfert Dapper’s “Description of Africa” (first published in Dutch in Amsterdam in 1668). Dapper was a Dutch physician and writer. Despite never traveling outside of the Netherlands, he wrote extensively on world history and geography. Dapper spoke many languages and often produced translations of his work. Best known for his maps of Africa and its surrounding islands and territories, Dapper used the travel reports of missionaries to inform his work.

William Bleek (1827 - 1875)

Latin text. Bleek, comparative linguist known for his pioneer studies of South African languages as the “Father of Bantu Philology.”
In his doctoral dissertation at the University of Bonn (1851), Bleek attempted to prove a North African origin of the Hottentot language. In about 1855 he went to Natal to study the language and customs of the Xhosa.
