Written five days before the Battle of Majuba Hill on 27 February 1881. At this time the Boers were encamped at the foot of Majuba. The letter mentions a requirement for more supply wagons, men and horses.

The Battle of Majuba Hill on 27 February 1881 was the final and decisive battle of the First Boer War that was a resounding victory for the Boers.

Mr Winkle by Sydney Carter c.1930’s

This watercolour was most likely made for one of the various books that Sydney Carter (1874-1945) illustrated.

In addition to illustrations, Carter was a painter, mainly in gouache and oils, and particularly of landscapes, trees, and farmsteads. His works are in prominent South African collections such as the Iziko South African National Gallery in Cape Town, Pretoria Art Museum, Durban Art Gallery, and Ann Bryant Art Gallery in East London.

Nathaniel Winkle is a fictional character in Charles Dickens’ first novel, The Pickwick Papers (1836). Although a city dweller Winkle considers himself an outdoor sportsman, though he turns out to be dangerously inept when handling horses and guns.

Signed print by Keith Alexander (1946-1988) one of South Africa’s foremost surrealist and photorealist painters.

In the sixties, Alexander travelled to South Africa where he studied art at the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal, majoring in sculpture. For his postgraduate thesis, the artist explored Surrealism, studying the work of Salvador Dali, Joan Miró, Max Ernst and Rene Magritte – famous international artists whose work influenced him greatly. Following his graduation, Alexander practiced briefly as a sculptor, achieving limited success. He eventually turned to paint, painting full-time from 1974.
