Cape Observatory: Letter from Henderson to Captain Beaufort
17 April 1833

Ten and a half manuscript pages relating to life as an astronomer at the Cape.

Thomas Henderson FRSE FRS FRAS (28 December 1798 – 23 November 1844) was a Scottish astronomer and mathematician noted for being the first person to measure the distance to Alpha Centauri, and for being the first Astronomer Royal for Scotland.

Sir Francis Beaufort KCB FRS FRGS FRAS MRIA (27 May 1774 – 17 December 1857) was an Irish hydrographer, the creator of the Beaufort cipher and the Beaufort scale, and a naval officer.

Herschel was an English polymath active as a mathematician, astronomer, chemist, inventor and experimental photographer who invented the blueprint and did botanical work.

George Henri Anne-Marie Victor count de Villebois-Mareuil or by his shortened name George de Villebois-Mareuil (22 March 1847, in Montaigu, Brittany, France – 6 April 1900, in Boshof, Orange Free State, South Africa) was a former colonel in the French infantry who fought and died on the side of the Boers during the Second Anglo-Boer War.

He was the first of only two foreign volunteers to be given the rank of Major-General in the armed forces of the Boer Republics.
