The Revival of Chiaroscuro Woodcuts by John Skippe (1781)

The prints contained in this folio are chiaroscuro woodcuts, a multi-block colour printing technique originally invented in the early 16th century by Italian masters like Ugo da Carpi. By the late 1700s, the technique had largely fallen out of practice. The creator of this collection, John Skippe (latinized as Johannes Skippe), was an English gentleman, affluent traveler, and amateur artist who dedicated himself to reviving the medium.

"To his friends and to every lover of the more elegant arts, John Skippe dedicates these remaining plates, cut in wood during times of playful leisure, while he attempted to restore an art that was almost lost. 1781."

First edition of Sir John Barrow’s A Voyage to Cochinchina (1806)

Two Continents in One Volume: While the primary text details Barrow’s 1792–1793 diplomatic voyage to Vietnam (Cochinchina) under Lord Macartney, the annex contains the first published English account of the 1801–1802 Truter-Somerville expedition to Dithakong (referred to here as the "Booshuana Nation" / Tswana) in the interior of South Africa.

The volume is highly prized for its aquatint plates, engraved by Thomas Medland and hand-coloured after original artwork by William Alexander and Samuel Daniell. Daniell’s illustrations of the Tswana people and South African wildlife in the annexed section remain some of the finest early European visual records of the region.

The Comic Almanack by George Cruikshank (1835-1853)

Precursor to Punch: Serialized annually across nineteen years (1835–1853), Cruikshank’s The Comic Almanack served as a vital bridge between Regency caricature and Victorian serial humour. Its mix of social commentary, seasonal satire, and parodic almanac conventions established a popular format that heavily influenced the founding of Punch magazine in 1841.

Captain Robert Percival’s An Account of the Cape of Good Hope (1804)

Captain Robert Percival, an officer in the 18th (Royal Irish) Regiment of Foot, arrived at the Cape with the British invasion fleet in 1795. His book is one of the earliest published English descriptions of the Cape written by a military participant. Published in 1804—during the brief interlude of Batavian (Dutch) rule under the Treaty of Amiens—Percival’s narrative explicitly served as British strategic propaganda, arguing that Great Britain had a vital commercial and geopolitical imperative to permanently annex the Cape.

Francis Grose’s A Provincial Glossary; with a Collection of Local Proverbs, and Popular Superstitions (1811) (Not a First Edition)

Before Francis Grose, English dictionaries (most notably Samuel Johnson’s) focused almost exclusively on standard, polite literary English. Grose, an antiquary and draughtsman, was among the very first scholars to treat regional dialects, local idioms, cant, and slang with serious historical interest rather than dismiss them as mere illiterate corruption.
His collections (which also include his famous 1785 Classical Dictionary of the Vulgar Tongue) laid the groundwork for modern dialectology and lexicography, serving as an invaluable direct source for the later Oxford English Dictionary.

Jacob Friedrich Ludovici’s Einleitung zum Civil-Proce
(Introduction to Civil Procedure) 1710

Jacob Friedrich Ludovici (1671–1723) was one of the most celebrated jurists of the early German Enlightenment. He was a pioneer in transitioning academic law away from archaic Latin treatises into the vernacular German tongue, making the mechanics of civil lawsuits accessible to practicing lawyers, clerks, and magistrates rather than just cloistered academics.

His works on civil procedure and Justinian law heavily influenced the pan-European understanding of Roman law during the 18th century—the exact body of common law that was simultaneously being codified, practiced, and exported by Dutch jurists to colonial outposts like the Cape of Good Hope.

Our Colony of Natal by Walter Peace (1884)

While the handbook was written "for the use of intending emigrants and others," Walter Peace’s role as the Natal Emigration Agent went far beyond just writing guides. Just two years before this 1884 edition was printed, the British colonial government in Natal wanted to bring German settlers to the southern region near the Mzimkulu River. However, the German government blocked the scheme.

Pivotally, it was Walter Peace himself who stepped in and suggested recruiting Norwegian settlers instead. His efforts led to the successful establishment of the Marburg settlement in 1882—the only successful Scandinavian agricultural colony in South Africa. This 1884 handbook represents the height of Peace's highly organized push to populate the Natal frontier with European farmers and tradespeople.

The Jameson Raid by Hugh Marshall Hole.
Ex libris Sarah Gertrude Millin (1930).

There is a profound historical irony to Sarah Gertrude Millin owning this book. In 1933 just three years after Marshall Hole published this volume, Millin published her acclaimed, definitive biography, Rhodes.

The Jameson Raid of 1895 (the subject of this book) was the catastrophic, unauthorized incursion into the South African Republic led by Dr. Leander Starr Jameson (pictured on the frontispiece). The raid was heavily backed by Cecil Rhodes and ultimately forced Rhodes to resign in disgrace as Prime Minister of the Cape Colony. Millin undoubtedly used contemporary accounts and histories exactly like this one by Marshall Hole while researching and writing her masterpiece on Rhodes.

Kinderklokkies by Chris. J. A. Fourie (1918).

In the Voorwoord Fourie explicitly highlights the linguistic dilemma facing South African educators in 1918. He writes:

"Wat taal betreft heb ik gebruik gemaakt van beide Nederlands en Afrikaans... Een middenweg moet nog gevonden worden, dat is, een verafrikaansde Nederlands."

(As far as language is concerned, I have made use of both Dutch and Afrikaans... A middle way must still be found, that is, an Afrikaans-ified Dutch.)

This is a textbook example of the "Tweede Taalbeweging” (Second Language Movement). In 1918, Dutch was still the official language of schools and the church, but Afrikaans was rapidly sweeping through the younger generation. Educators like Fourie were caught in a strange limbo—trying to phase out standard European Dutch while building up a standardized literary framework for Afrikaans.
