During the 9th Frontier War (1877-78) in the Eastern Cape, the main mounted police force involved was the Frontier Armed and Mounted Police (FAMP), which was a locally recruited, multi-racial unit responsible for maintaining order along the Xhosa frontier. This force was highly effective due to its local knowledge and mobility. The FAMP was re-organized and militarized in 1878, becoming the Cape Mounted Riflemen (CMR).
