Jukskei River on 18th Ave, Alexandra Township (Johannesburg)

Pencil & pastel by Sipho Ndebele

Sipho Ndebele (1936-2024) was one of the founders of the Amadlozi Group, a collective of artists in Apartheid South Africa who tried to express a distinctly African identity in their work. In Ndebele's case this turned out to be on the spot sketches in Johannesburg's "native" townships of everyday life: weddings, parties, drinking, gambling, brawls and funerals.
