St. Raphael Quinquina by Loupot

Silkscreen by Charles Loupot, France.
1955

Loupot, was a pioneer of modern French poster design. His style was characterized by simplicity and the synthesis of ideas. He worked for 5 years in Switzerland as a typographer and was very successful with his posters. In 1930 he, Cassandre and Maurice Moyrand founded their own studio, Alliance Graphique. The apéritif St Raphael became his most important client (1936) and this co-operation lasted far into the 1960s. In 1945, Loupot designed the famous St Raphaël waiters and used them as a logo on transport, advertisements and posters.

Quinquina is an aromatised wine, a variety of apéritif. Traditionally quinquinas contain cinchona, which provides quinine, introduced to Europe from Peru.
