African Heritage by Barbara Tyrrell (Inscribed)

Dual Association and Inscription: The title page bears signatures and inscriptions from both co-authors, artist Barbara Tyrrell and her son, Peter Jurgens. Jurgens inscribed the copy on April 28, 1985: "To Mrs W Lister in gratitude for a most precious gift. Best wishes."

Collaborative Ethnographic Continuation: African Heritage represents a direct extension of Tyrrell's seminal work (Tribal Peoples of Southern Africa). While Tyrrell contributed her signature costume and ceremonial line drawings, Peter Jurgens authored the accompanying text focusing on the magico-religious beliefs, spiritual practices, and social symbolism behind indigenous Southern African dress and rituals.

Living Mobile Studio: Tyrrell famously documented traditional dress across Southern Africa by traveling extensively in a custom-built van, painting subjects directly from life to create a vital visual record of regional dress before Western influence altered these styles.
