Inscribed Walter Battiss by Murray Schoonraad (1976)

First edition.
Inscribed by Walter Battiss to famous art dealer, Natalie Knight (b.1938).
Knight started her Gallery in Hyde Park, Johannesburg and exhibited the likes of Andy Warhol, David Hockney and William Kentridge. Knight was also the curator of several shows honouring Nelson Mandela.

Murray Schoonraad, an art historian who was a former pupil of Battiss, became a major authority on his work. Schoonraad’s book offers a comprehensive look at the life and art of Walter Battiss (1906-1982), who is considered South Africa's foremost abstract painter and is known for his unique "Fook Island" concept and extensive study of Southern African rock art. Murray Schoonraad's work provides valuable insight into the artist's career, from his early life and influences to his significant contributions to the South African art canon. This specific publication is a key reference cited in subsequent studies and exhibitions of Battiss's work
