The silhouette on the cover depicts Kentridge’s iconic motif—a figure torn from torn-paper silhouettes layered over vintage French encyclopedic or dictionary pages—reflecting his signature technique of working over discarded historical texts.

The title page bears Kentridge's large, distinct signature in red ink, mirroring the bold coloured wax crayons and inks he frequently integrates into his charcoal drawings and altered prints.
