War Games Revisited by Sir Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi (1967)
Artist’s proof War Games Revised (often referred to as War Games Revisited) is a 1967 screenprint by the Scottish artist Sir Eduardo Luigi Paolozzi CBE RA (7 March 1924 – 22 April 2005) It is a key piece from his acclaimed portfolio titled Universal Electronic Vacuum. He is widely considered to be one of the pioneers of pop art.
The artwork explores the intersection between modern technology, popular culture, and the mechanization of war.
The title and technical text refer to military strategy, but the imagery subverts this seriousness by including lighthearted elements like Mickey Mouse.
Of Italian descent, Paolozzi was born in Leith near Edinburgh. He studied in Edinburgh and London and spent two years in Paris from 1947, where he produced enigmatic, bronze sculptures reminiscent of those by Giacometti. During the same period he made a series of dada and surrealist-inspired collages in which magazine advertisements, cartoons and machine parts are combined, thus anticipating the concerns of Pop Art. Alongside teaching at various art schools he developed his printmaking and sculpture. Paolozzi was particularly interested in the mass media and in science and technology.
