Mzilikazi, originally a Zulu chief,led the Matabele nation to the highveld around Bulawayo in 1840, and ruled this territory until his death in 1868. Suceeded eventually by Lobengula, Matabeleland and its capital were captured by the Europeans pioneer settlers under Dr Jameson, what the author describes as a remarkable Calvary Blitzkreig”. This was seventy five years ago and has become known as the Matabele War : the two pitched battles at the Shagani and Bembesi, are fully described.
