"The First Settlement of the Dutch in Mauritius" by Prince Roland Bonaparte (1858–1924), the grand-nephew of Napoleon Bonaparte. Prince Roland was a passionate geographer, anthropologist, and botanist. He served as President of the Société de Géographie in Paris from 1910 until his death.

Rather than being issued through a commercial publishing house for general trade distribution, this work was privately printed at Bonaparte's own expense in Paris, intended mainly for scholarly distribution and private presentation copies.

The work draws directly on Dutch archival records (specifically built on work by P.A. Leupe), translating primary Dutch documents into French in order to document the earliest 17th-century Dutch colonization of Mauritius, including the construction of Fort Frederik Hendrik (pictured).
