Terra Bona Tea Tin

Commemorative tin from Terrabona Tea Company celebrating the end of the Second South African (Boer) War. King Edward VII came to the throne during the war, upon the death of his mother Queen Victoria on 22 January 1901. The war ended on 31 May 1902

On the front is a picture of King Edward VII and Queen Alexandra. Underneath their image is the text 'THEIR IMPERIAL MAJESTIES KING EDWARD VII & QUEEN ALEXANDRA WHEN PRINCE & PRINCESS OF WALES GRACIOUSLY ACCEPTED CASKETS OF TERRABONA TEA & COFFEE AT THE Olympia Exhibition February 8th 1894'.

On the side of the tea tin is an image of a Boer soldier shaking hands with 'John Bull'. Behind them is a circle with a map of South Africa. Above the map is an angel holding a palm frond with the words 'TERRABONA TEA / Live in Peace forever'.

On the reverse of the tea tin a female figure with long hair, in classical dress being served a cup of tea by a cupid. In the background is the waning moon. The figures leans on another circle with the map of South Africa. The tin’s lid is attached by a hinge at the back.
