Li Fiho d'Avignoun 1885

Li Fiho d'Avignoun / Les Filles D’Avignon/ The Young Ladies of Avignon

1885
By Théodore Aubanel

Théodore Aubanel (1829 – 1886) was a félibre poet.

Li Fiho d'Avignoun is Aubanel's second collection, which brings together "mature" poems (in particular La Vénus d'Arles ). First published in 1885 by private subscription only, it was printed by the Empremarié centralo dóu Miejour in Montpellier. The book was immediately condemned by the archbishop, with orders to stop distribution and to burn the seized copies. Aubanel never really recovered from this cabal.

This work, one of the writer's very last, is an important marker in his career and offers a sensual style, quite unusual for the time and place.

Inscribed to Uys Krige from Mary and Roy Campbell.
