Cape Mounted Rifles - Eastern Cape Frontier War
1878.
Cape of Good Hope, Blue Book.
During the 9th Frontier War (1877-78) in the Eastern Cape, the main mounted police force involved was the Frontier Armed and Mounted Police (FAMP), which was a locally recruited, multi-racial unit responsible for maintaining order along the Xhosa frontier. This force was highly effective due to its local knowledge and mobility. The FAMP was re-organized and militarized in 1878, becoming the Cape Mounted Riflemen (CMR).
The Ninth Frontier War (1877-1878), was the final conflict in a series of nine wars fought between the Cape colonists and the Xhosa peoples between 1779 and 1878. This protracted conflict was primarily driven by colonial expansion, which led to the dispossession of Xhosa land and cattle. The war resulted in the Galekaland and other remaining Xhosa territories being annexed by the British and incorporated into the Cape Colony, effectively ending Xhosa sovereignty.
