On 18 July 1978 ANC leader Nelson Mandela celebrated his 60th birthday on Robben Island where he has been jailed the past 16 years. This book is a major collection of his speeches and writings and contains many important historical documents. Also included is an account of Mandela's time on Robben Island by 'Mac' Maharaj, a fellow prisoner for 12 years.
Photographs covering Mandela's life, including many previously unpublished, illustrate this collection.

• Founding of Umkhonto we Sizwe (The Spear of the Nation);
• Trials.
In 1961, while the subject of a nationwide police hunt, Mandela issued a statement explaining his decision to continue working underground: "The struggle is my life", he said. "I will continue fighting for freedom until the end of my days."
John Kane-Berman was the CEO of the South African Institute of Race Relations from 1983-2014.
