Joe Modise, Umkhonto weSizwe Poster

This poster was issued by the ANC's Umkhonto we Sizwe (MK) in the weeks after Chris Hani was assassinated on 10 April 1993.

Johannes "Joe" Modise (1929 - 2001) helped to found Umkhonto we Sizwe, and served as South Africa's first black Minister of Defence from 1994 to 1999.

Here, Modise is dressed in 'FAPLA pattern' military fatigues. The ANC's military campaign was still very active at the time as the first democratic elections were still a year away.

Umkhonto we Sizwe was the armed wing of the African National Congress (ANC), со-founded by Nelson Mandela in the wake of the Sharpeville massacre. Its founding represented the conviction in the face of the massacre that the ANC could no longer limit itself to nonviolent protest; its mission was to fight against the South African government.
