The Royal Edinburgh Album of Cape Photographs 1869

A collection of photographs taken in the Cape of Good Hope (Cape Town) and published in 1869 by Rev. William Fitz-Harry Curtis. It was the first major photographic work dedicated to the Cape. The album originally contained 54 photographs, many of which are also held in the collection of the Duke of Edinburgh. The images depict landscapes, including Table Mountain and Devil's Peak, as well as scenes in Michell's Pass and other locations.

The album was produced by Rev. William Fitz-Harry Curtis, an amateur photographer. It was published in London in 1868. The collection is notable for its focus on the Cape and its early documentation of the region's scenery. Some of the photographs were reproduced and are now part of the Parliament Collection.

A gift of Cape views to Prince Alfred, Duke of Edinburgh by the Rev. W. Curtis was published in London in 1868, the Royal Edinburgh album of Cape photographs being the first major photographic work dealing exclusively with Cape scenery. Only two copies have been traced.
