A sick-warden was a lay preacher who was responsible for the spiritual care and comfort of the faithful on VOC ships and later in the Reformed churches in the Cape Colony from the 16th to the 18th centuries.
The VOC initially used sick-wardens in some congregations and areas where congregations had not yet been established. This was due to the shortage of ministers, but also because they were cheaper.
