This book, 'Conversations in Afrikaans' is a very rare, printed example of the evolution of the Afrikaans language. Afrikaans only became an official language in 1925.

Daniël Francois du Toit (1846–1923), or Oom Lokomotief as he was known, was a language activist, journalist and literary scholar. He was editor of Di Patriot for fourteen years and was a founding member of the Society of True Afrikaners

On 14 August 1875 he was one of the eight founding members of the Society of True Afrikaners. He was known to the public as Oom Lokomotief, the name under which he regularly wrote columns in Di Patriot . From 1876 he served on the editorial board of Di Patriot and in 1878 became the permanent editor of this newspaper, a task he fulfilled until 1891. In this capacity he determined the editorial policy of the paper and was also fully responsible for its publication. He was also a co-founder of the printing press that bears his name, DF du Toit & Co, which printed Di Patriot and also several other publications of the First Afrikaans Language Movement , including Di histories van ons land in di taal van ons volk , Eerste Afrikaans printjies boeki vir soet kinders and Patriot-Wordeboek.
