A General Map of Africa c.1790
Hand coloured copperplate engraving by Robert de Vaugondy (1688-1766).
De Vaugondy was one of the leading French cartographers in his time. The Atlas Universal was one of the most important atlases of the 18th century. One of the reasons, is because de Vaugondy insisted on verifying the latitude and longitude of many regions of his maps. (Cartographers would copy one another’s’ maps). He was appointed royal geographer to Louis XV.
