The first major study in English of Japanese ceramic art, and a significant piece of Victorian book production and design.
Volume I: Contains introductory essays on Japanese art, including a preface (dated 1877 in some copies due to the lengthy production process), text pages, in-text color illustrations, and 12 lithographed plates (designated A-M, excluding J, which was never published).
Volume II: This volume is primarily plate-based, featuring 51 full-page plates, many of which are exquisite chromolithographs, some heightened with gold. Each plate is accompanied by a descriptive text leaf. It also includes four plates of marks and monograms with accompanying text.
A scarce De Luxe Edition was produced prior to this edition.
