Rock-Paintings in South Africa (1930)
From parts of the Eastern Province and Orange Free State
Copied by George William Stow
With an introduction and descriptive notes by Dorothea F. Bleek
George William Stow (1822–1882): An English-born geologist and ethnologist. Between 1867 and 1882, he travelled across the Eastern Cape and the Orange Free State, painstakingly creating hand-drawn copies of San (Bushman) rock art. He feared the originals would be destroyed or fade away, making his "copies" vital historical records.
Dorothea F. Bleek (1873–1948): The daughter of Wilhelm Bleek (the linguist who co-compiled the famous Bleek and Lloyd archive). Dorothea spent her life continuing her father's work. She curated Stow’s unpublished drawings, wrote the descriptive notes, and facilitated the 1930 publication nearly 50 years after Stow’s death.
