Reminiscences of Life in South Africa from 1846 to the Present Day (1908)
A historical memoir by Joseph Millerd Orpen, first published in 1908 by P. Davis & Sons in Durban.
The work covers South African history and social customs from 1846. Published as a single volume of approximately 493 pages. While a second volume was intended and "already in the press," it was never officially published at that time and existed only in manuscript form.
The book is valued by historians and archaeologists for its first-hand accounts of early legislative history and colonial life. Orpen was a multifaceted figure who served in several South African parliaments and held various official positions between 1853 and 1903.
Significant focus on the Orange River Sovereignty, Basutoland, and leaders such as Moshesh, Adam Kok, and Andries Pretorius. Observations on Sir Harry Smith, Sir George Grey, and Stockenstrom.
Orpen is noted for his early anthropological work, specifically his documentation of San (Bushman) mythology and rock art.
