Ken Czech in his excellent bibliography states; Lacy hunted in various locales in South Africa during the 1860s and 1870s. West of the Drakensburg Mountains, near the Bombo Hills, he and his hunting partner bagged buffalo and elephant, with some hippopotamus hunting on the Umlomati River. He relates an incident in which his partner excitedly double-charged his rifle while pursuing giraffe, then was bowled over by the recoil and concussion. He also recounts later hunting episodes after a variety of small game in the Orange Free State and leopard hunting in Natal, with hippo bagged on the Tugela River.
