The Colony of Natal by Robert James Mann (1859)

The Colony of Natal is a historical work compiled and edited by Robert James Mann in 1859. Subtitled "An Account of the Characteristics and Capabilities of this British Dependency," it served as an early standard guide for the British colony of Natal. The book was published under the authority of the Government Immigration Board of Natal specifically to provide guidance and information to prospective emigrants. It was developed from prize-winning essays submitted to a 1858 competition on "practical matters relating to the character of the Colony as a field for emigrants". Robert James Mann, who was the Superintendent of Education in Natal at the time, was tasked with preparing the guide using these essays and other supplemental sources.
