Bishop Colenso Letter, Zulu War interest (1881)

Three page manuscript letter by John William Colenso (1814 - 1883)
Dated 16 May 1881.

Written at his homestead and mission station named Bishopstowe.

Colenso was an Anglican British cleric and mathematician, defender of the Zulu people, and biblical scholar, who served as the first Bishop of Natal. He was a scholar of the Zulu language.

This letter is to F.W. Chesson, who was the Secretary of the Aborigines' Protection Society. Chesson was a known advocate for the rights of indigenous peoples and a key figure in British humanitarian movements, which aligns perfectly with Colenso's later work championing the cause of the Zulu people and King Cetshwayo against colonial oppression.

Colenso mentions: Sikoto, son of King Mpande kaSenzangakhona; Getswayo; Isandlwana where Sikoto fought; Rorke's Drift.
