The official commission document appoints Tytherleigh as a Temporary Captain in the Active Citizen Force, effective 1 February 1916. It is executed under the authority and signature of Viscount Buxton (Charles Sydney Buxton), Governor-General and High Commissioner for South Africa, and bears the embossed red Great Seal of the Union of South Africa.

During 1906–1907, Tytherleigh served as a fingerprint specialist in the Department of Native Affairs overseeing indentured Chinese labourers imported to work the Witwatersrand gold mines. Fingerprinting was then a novel forensic technology, heavily applied in colonial and labour administration.

Tytherleigh’s career spans major regional conflicts, serving in the Natal Carbineers and Bethune’s Mounted Infantry (Trooper No. 554) during the Anglo-Boer War, as well as serving as a magistrate in Tsumeb following General Louis Botha’s 1915 South West Africa Campaign.
