Cape Town- Luana. First Day Airmail Cover with Native counter canceller (1939)

This First Day Airmail Cover from 21 August 1939 combines two significant historical elements—a short-lived international air route cut short by the outbreak of World War II, and institutionalized postal segregation in South West Africa.

The Inaugural Cape Town–Loanda Airmail Service (August 1939)

Aviation Milestone: On August 21, 1939, South African Airways (SAA) launched its new airmail service linking Cape Town to Loanda (Luanda, Angola) via Windhoek. The inaugural flight was operated by SAA Junkers aircraft under Captain K.S.P. Jones and First Officer J.A. Rademan.

Cut Short by WWII: Just 13 days after this flight, World War II broke out in Europe, leading South Africa to enter the war on September 6, 1939. SAA's civilian fleet of German-built Junkers aircraft was immediately requisitioned by the South African Air Force for military service. As a result, this air route was abandoned after only three flights, making surviving covers from the service exceedingly scarce.

The Windhoek "N" (Native) Counter Canceller

Postal Segregation: Under South African civil administration in South West Africa, the apartheid-era practice of racial segregation extended directly into the postal system.

Institutional Markings: Post offices in major hubs like Windhoek operated separate service counters for white and non-white patrons. Handstamps containing the letter "N" (for "Native") were assigned specifically to the segregated counter dedicated to serving Black members of the public.

Philatelic Significance: While "N" cancellers were used on routine mail, their application on a specialized international inaugural flight cover is notable, as recorded in Ralph Putzel's definitive reference text The Postmarks of South Africa and Former States and Colonies (p. 174).

Mixed Franking

The envelope features a dual franking: a 1/2d South West Africa issue (depicting a Kori Bustard) paired with a 1d South African stamp, combining postal rates across the Union of South Africa and SWA mandate boundaries to meet the required airmail rate to Angola.
