Carpentaria was a wooden sailing vessel of 1472 tons, built in Quebec, Canada. The ship was sixty days out from Bombay on passage to Liverpool. Developing leaks, the Carpentaria, put into Simon's Bay on the 14 August 1858. The Master put his sinking ship to ground at the earliest opportunity - right across the end of the Naval Ordnance Depot Jetty.
