Issued by the Royal Automobile Club of South Africa (RACSA), a pioneering motoring organization established in Cape Town in 1901. It was granted a royal charter in 1911. For decades, it published essential travel guides and provided early motorist services before being officially absorbed by the Automobile Association of South Africa in November 1965.
Originally founded as the Automobile Club of South Africa on October 23, 1901, in Cape Town.
Granted royal status in 1911 following the Duke of Connaught's visit to open the first Union parliament.
On November 29, 1965, the club was officially taken over by the Automobile Association (AA) of South Africa.
The Union of South Africa was a British Dominion and, later, a Commonwealth realm in southern Africa from 1910 to 1961. It was the historical predecessor to the present-day Republic of South Africa. It came into existence on 31 May 1910 with the unification of the Cape, Natal, Transvaal, and Orange River colonies. It included the territories that were formerly part of the South African Republic and the Orange Free State.
