Newtown, Johannesburg
c. 1935.
Watercolour by Helen Monk.
The provenance for this painting is that the previous owner knew the artist.
Monk had told them that this every-day scene depicted the bustling Newtown part of the city. I doubt any of these buildings survive today.
At the turn of the 20th century, the Newtown Precinct was known as "the Brickfields". This area was rich in clay. As this land was close to the centre of Johannesburg and the railway line, many businesses and immigrants coming from overseas bought stands there. Soon, trading companies, banks, brick companies, a brewery, and fisheries moved into the area. The area was surveyed in October 1904, following a fire. It was then renamed "Newtown"
