The Gold Miners by Cartwright. Signed deluxe edition (1962)

The Gold Miners was published by Purnell & Sons in 1962. Signed by Cartwright in Johannesburg on September 25, 1962

The Chronicler of South African Mining

Alan Patrick (A.P.) Cartwright was one of the premier popular historians of South Africa's industrial boom. Before writing definitive corporate and industrial histories, he was a prominent journalist (working for the Rand Daily Mail and editing The Star).

Because of his deep journalistic connections, The Gold Miners wasn't just a dry academic breakdown; it was built on direct anecdotes, tracking the human stories from the earliest lone prospectors right up to the massive financial empires of Cecil John Rhodes and the Oppenheimers.

A Record of the 75-Year Jubilee

The publication of this book in 1962 was intentionally timed to chronicle and celebrate roughly the first 75 years of the Witwatersrand gold fields (following the initial 1886 discoveries). It captured a retrospective look at an industry that, by the time Cartwright was signing this page, had already employed over seven million men and fundamentally reshaped the geopolitical and economic landscape of Southern Africa.
