Letter by Robert Mitford Bowker 1863

Robert Mitford Bowker (1810-1892)

Bowker represented Somerset East in the House of Commons from 1854 to 1868, and again from 1870 to 1873. He later also became a member of the Legislative Council for the North Eastern Circle from 1881 to 1890. In both councils he was a proponent of a higher suffrage qualification. Bowker was a modest representative of the British Settlers, and of a family that had contributed much to the development of the country where they had come to settle.

The letter covers the Free State cession to the Cape Colony and election commentary.
