Rev. John Campbell’s Travels in South Africa 1822 (Vol. I & II). Ex libris, Revil Mason.

This 1822 first edition set of Rev. John Campbell’s Travels in South Africa (Vol. I & II) features an exceptional association copy connection:

Prominent South African Provenance
The set belonged to the distinguished South African archaeologist Professor Revil John Mason (1929–2020), pioneer of Iron Age and Stone Age archaeology in South Africa and long-time director of the Archaeological Research Unit at Wits University. His printed bookplate (R. J. MASON) and signature (RJMason) appear on the paste-down and preliminary leaves.

Working Scholar's Copy
Mason extensively annotated the volumes in pencil throughout his research, including page markers at the back referencing key geographical and ethnographic observations from Campbell’s 19th-century journey into the interior.

Curious Condition History
A handwritten bookseller's note explains that despite lacking 10 of its 12 aquatint plates, the set has unique character: Mason kept these volumes on the verandah of his smallholding in North Riding, Johannesburg—his favourite outdoor reading spot—meaning the weathering, toning, and water marks on the paper were caused directly by exposure to the South African elements while he studied them.

2 vols, different sizes.

Poor condition; incomplete; only 2 plates out of 12 present. Sold with all faults.
